Honda has been making it their mission to give back for the holidays, so they teamed up with the Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC Children’s) and Saint Nick himself to do just that. Surprising children with a Virtual Reality (VR) treat and an extra present for their stockings, Honda is helping bring the much-needed Christmas magic to those who need it most.
The Children’s Hospital of Orange County
The CHOC Children’s has been striving towards improved pediatric healthcare since 1964. Their partnership with the prestigious University of California, Irvine has helped extend research into childhood illnesses and diseases while offering kids over 100 additional programs and services from a state-of-the-art, 279-bed main facility.
The Candy Cane Lane Virtual Experience
This year, Honda has lent a hand by taking the kids into a winter wonderland without even having them leave their beds. Honda has always been a company built on innovation, and they harnessed that same spirit to create the Candy Cane Lane virtual experience. Using cutting-edge Oculus Rift headsets donated by Microsoft, they developed a yuletide display that saw viewers pulled along from the seat of a virtual sleigh.
Children were transported through a snow-covered neighborhood, with Christmas decorations becoming ever more elaborate as they continued. Just as Santa Claus, with reindeer at the reins, appeared above to drop a present into the viewer’s virtual lap, a real gift was dropped into the lap of each child.
Honda might be more familiar with CR-V and Civic than Comet and Cupid, but they really helped make a difference this Christmas season. In the words of Susie Rossick, assistant vice president of Honda Auto Marketing: “This year Honda has the unique privilege of transporting children at CHOC Children’s to a virtual winter wonderland that brings the festive spirit of the holidays to the kids directly.”
